semiconductor
discharge
tube
materials
are
silicon
(Si)
and
germanium
(Ge),

covalent
bond
is
a

of
bound
electron
and
cannot
move
freely.
Its
characteristics

insulator
and

conduct
electricity.
However,
this
bond
is
not
very
strong.

temperature,
a
small
number
of
valence
electrons
will
be
excited
by
heat
or
light
to
gain
enough
energy
to
break
free
from
the
bond
and
become
free
electrons.
When
there
is
no
external
electric
field,
the
movement
of
these
electrons
is
irregular.
When
there
is
an
external
electric
field,
these
electrons
move
directionally
against
the
direction
of
the
electric
field
to
form
an
electric
current,
which
is
called
electronic
conduction.

When
a
valence
electron
breaks
free
from
the
bondage
and
becomes
a
free
electron,
it
leaves
a
vacancy
in
its
original
position
at
the
same
time.
This
vacancy
is
called
a
hole.
The
appearance

holes
is
an

that
distinguishes

semiconductor

from
other
conductors.

Free

negatively
charged
particles,

holes
can

regarded
as
positively
charged
particles,
and

carriers.

parts.
