Worm Gear Slew Drive​ Description

 

A worm gear, also known as a worm drive, is a mechanical gear system that consists of a toothed wheel, called the worm gear, meshing with a spiraling screw-like gear, called the worm. The worm gear resembles a screw thread, while the worm gear resembles a cylindrical gear with teeth that wrap around it.

The worm gear and worm have perpendicular shafts, and when the worm is rotated, it engages with the teeth of the worm gear, causing it to rotate as well. The angle of the helical teeth on the worm creates a sliding action, which results in the gear reduction between the two components. The reduction ratio is determined by the number of teeth on the worm gear and the number of threads on the worm.
