What is a Thermocouple?
A thermocouple is a transducer that converts thermal energy into electrical energy by joining wires of dissimilar metals to create a junction. Temperature changes at this junction generate measurable voltage for temperature determination.
Operating on the Seebeck Effect, thermocouples produce voltage proportional to temperature changes and metal properties. These insulated wire assemblies serve as critical safety and monitoring tools for industrial processes and equipment.
How Thermocouples Work
Two dissimilar wires form a junction where one wire (hot/measuring junction) measures temperature, while the other connects to a reference cold junction at known temperature. The thermocouple calculates unknown temperatures by comparing voltage at the hot junction with the reference temperature.
