Make
Ferro
Titanium?
Ferro
titanium
is
primarily
produced
through
the
aluminothermic
reduction
process,
which
is
highly
exothermic
(produces
its
own
heat).

Raw
Materials:
The
main
ingredients
are
titanium-bearing
materials
(like
titanium
scrap,
or
ilmenite
sand),
iron
oxide
(mill
scale
or
iron
ore),
and
aluminum
powder
as
the
reducing
agent.
-
The
Reaction:
The
materials
are
mixed
and
placed
in
a
refractory-lined
furnace.
The
reaction
is
initiated
by
an
external
heat
source.
The
aluminum
aggressively
reduces
the
oxides
of
titanium
and
iron,
generating
immense
heat
that
melts
the
resulting
metals,
which
form
the
ferro
titanium
alloy.

Separation:
The
molten
ferro
titanium,
being
denser,
sinks
to
the
bottom
of
the
furnace.
The
lighter
alumina
(Al₂O₃)
slag
floats
on
top.
The
two
layers
are
then
tapped
separately
and
allowed
to
cool.
-
Processing:
The
solidified
ferro
titanium
is
crushed
and
sized
for
shipment
to
steel
mills.
