Ferrosilicon
is
a
convenient
way
to
add
silicon
as
an
alloying
element,
improving
various
properties
of
the
final
steel.
Slag
reduction
–
In
the
manufacture
of
stainless
steel,
the
presence
of
silicon
can
reduce
chromium
oxides
in
the
melt,
thereby
increasing
the
recovery
of
metallic
chromium.
Deoxidation
–
Ferrosilicon
can
quickly
remove
oxygen
from
the
melt,
thereby
avoiding
the
presence
of
inclusion-forming
oxides
and
the
loss
of
desired
elements.
Fuel
–
Some
steel
mills
add
ferrosilicon
to
the
melt
so
that
it
can
be
burned
away,
bringing
heat
into
the
furnace
and
thus
reducing
energy
